Mission
The
Luther Institute advances the role of faith and ethics in public
life through learning, service and leadership. Based in the nations
capital, the Luther Institute offers seminars, conferences, and
publications for laity and clergy. An inter-Lutheran organization,
it recognizes and serves leaders, scholars, educators, and those
in social ministries, both within and outside of the Lutheran community.
The Luther
Institute is called to be a catalyst in and from the nations
capitol to enhance learning and to recognize servant leadership.
The Institute focuses on issues of faith and public policy as they
meet on the "public square." The Institute is a non-partisan,
educational organization, edifying various constituencies on issues
of national and global importance. It does not advocate any particular
position or candidate. The Luther Institute approaches its mission
from a Lutheran perspective and invites both Lutherans and non-Lutherans
to participate in its events. The Institute consciously facilitates
discussion and shared insights among laity and clergy from all Lutheran
Church bodies, other Christians and with people from other faiths.
The Luther Institutes
mission focuses upon:
- Faith
- advancing the role and impact of faith in public life;
-
Learning - providing symposia, public affairs seminars,
a Lutheran Study Center,
and distance learning activities; and
- Service
- recognizing and encouraging servant leadership to church
and society.
The Luther Institute
is:
- an inter-Lutheran
agency - participating with members of the two largest
Lutheran church bodies in North America, as well as with Lutherans
from abroad and fostering conversations among them;
- a partnering
agency - working with Lutheran and ecumenical organizations,
and institutions of higher education in Washington, DC, across
the United States, and internationally;
- strategically
placed - serving as a Lutheran voice in Washington,
DC, with purposes distinct from official church bodies, and providing
service regionally and nationally.
Serving from
a Lutheran perspective implies that one:
- encourages
learning, scholarship, and reflection over the interfaces of faith
and public life; recognizes and celebrates distinguished service
and leadership by Lutherans from around the world;
- enhances
the mission and character of Lutheran educational institutions
and social ministry organizations in cooperation with their boards
and staffs; and
- supports
individuals as they reflect and discuss the meaning of their unique
vocations of service and faith.
