The Lutheran Study Center Application Process,
Description: The Lutheran Study Center (LSC) is a program of the Luther Institute in Washington, DC. The purpose of the LSC is to support faculty at Lutheran colleges, primarily through research grants, and to enhance the Lutheran character of their academic institutions. Research topics are not restricted; however, preference is given to proposals focusing on public policy, faith and ethics in the public sphere, and the impact of Lutherans and Lutheran thought in the public sphere.
One faculty member per college may apply. To identify the college’s candidate, Chief Academic Officers may identify a faculty member for participation or hold an internal competition. Individual faculty members are also encouraged to contact their Chief Academic Officers. Prospective fellows are asked to provide the following to the Institute via their Chief Academic Officers:
a letter of application;
a curriculum vitae;
a project description (maximum 1,000 words) - the description should mention how the faculty member intends to share his/her insights with students and colleagues;
and a letter of support from the chief academic officer. The total amount of the grant is $10,000. Half of the grant is supplied by the Luther Institute and half is supplied by the fellow’s academic institution. The grant project should be accomplished within 12 months of selection for the award. Fellows will be asked to make a public presentation on their research in Washington, DC and to write a short piece suitable for one the Institute’s publications. Fellows are also encouraged to seek additional venues to share the results of the work (e.g, conferences, academic publications). The application deadline is April 15, 2004. Decisions will be made by May 15, 2004.
Materials should be sent to Laura L. Mitchell, Ph.D., Acting President, The Luther Institute, 226 E. Capitol Street, Washington, DC 20003. For more information, contact Laura Mitchell at 202.547.5504 or mitchell@lutherinst.org.
